Solar Case Studies - Public Sector

St Crispin School, Somerset

Apollo Renewables installed this 4.32kWp grid connected photovoltaic system for a school in Somerset.

The system was installed over a shallow pitched zinc standing seam roof on a school classroom block. Lengths of UniStrut channel were installed onto the roof with a UniRac mounting system fixed onto this channel.

A visual display was installed within the main hallway of the building to show the performance of the system to students. A datalogger package was installed to allow detailed monitoring of the system, this also included weather sensors such as wind speed, solar irradiance, ambient and module temperature.

The datalogger is connected to the school’s PC network, allowing the data to be accessed from an internet connected computer.

The installation was completed by Apollo Renewables Limited.

Bridport Children’s Centre, Bridport, Dorset

The grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) system with Sharp modules was retro-fitted onto a tiled pitched roof.

The client received a Low Carbon Buildings Programme (Phase 2) grant covering 50% of the project costs.

24 Sharp ND-170 (polycrystalline) 170W PV modules were used in the installation and were mounted on a Schüco PV Light mounting system.

The 4.08 kWp array is almost silent in operation and will generate around 3,597 kWh of environmentally friendly, free electricity each year.

The installation was completed by Ecofirst Limited.

Mary Bassett School, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire

The grid connected roof mounted PV as been installed and commissioned by Ardenham Energy Ltd on the roof of The Mary Bassett School in the centre of Leighton Buzzard. The project was supported by the Lottery funded Community Sustainable Energy Programme, Low Carbon Buildings Programme and PTA. Ardenham Energy undertook the installation in October 2008.

The installation was undertaken following the award of both a CSEP and Low Carbon Building Programme Phase 2 Grant. The electricity generated is synchronised with the grid supply via 3 inverters and will be used to supply clean energy to the property, as well as exporting to the grid for use elsewhere when there is more energy produced than is necessary in the property.

The 8.6 kWp array is almost silent in operation and will generate around 8000 kWh of greenhouse gas free electricity each year. The installation includes a display in the reception area which will outline real time energy production as well as cumulative kWh and CO2 savings.

The installation took 5 days to complete.

Amersham & Wycombe College (Chesham Campus)

Amersham & Wycombe College decided to install PV onto the roof of a building on their Chesham campus as the college were offering installer training courses which would lead to the City & Guilds certificate 2372 "Installing & Testing Photovoltaic (PV) Systems". Amersham & Wycombe College felt that lecturers and students would find it beneficial having a local system which students could fully relate to.

The project was grant funded under Phase 2 of the Low Carbon Building Programme and part funded by Amersham & Wycombe College. Once the funding had been agreed the college identified Photon Energy as the preferred installer to install the system. Due to the campus having a flat roof, a bespoke mounting system was installed, along the centre of the roof running east to west where a channel of A-shaped rooflights allows natural daylight into the corridor below.

Historically, the corridor suffered from overheating in the summer, so the shading which was created from the PV modules was welcomed.

The installation took 2 days to install and 1 day to commission. To date, the installation has helped to provide students with a greater awareness of the benefits of PV and sound knowledge of the installation process.

Hawthorns School, Wokingham, Berkshire

The grid connected roof mounted PV has been installed and commissioned by Ardenham Energy Ltd on the Hawthorns School in Wokingham after development work by TV Energy and Wokingham Borough Council.

The installation was undertaken following the award of a Low Carbon Building Programme Phase 1 Grant and planning approval by Wokingham Borough Council in September 07. The electricity generated is synchronised with the grid supply via an inverter and will be used to supply clean energy to the building as well as exporting to the grid for use elsewhere when there is more energy produced than is necessary.

The 2kWp array is almost silent in operation and will generate around 1600kWh of greenhouse gas free electricity each year, The installation includes a display in the reception area which outlines real time energy production as well as cumulative kWh and CO2 savings.

West Oxford Community Centre, Oxfordshire

The grid connected roof mounted PV Array has been installed by Ardenham Energy Ltd and commissioned by South Facing at the West Oxford Community Centre on the Botley Road in Oxford. Alternergy Ltd was the European distributor chosen to supply all the hardware for the system including the modules, inverters and mounting frames. Sharp modules were chosen as the most cost effective and high quality solution available on the market.

MANCAT, Manchester

This Sixth form college features Sharp modules on a two-storey solar facade. Inspired by the installation at the CIS Tower, the south facade of the new building is clad in a striking monolithic array of solar PV modules. Taking advantage of the building's flat roof, rows of PV modules crown the building providing further clean energy.

A total of 482 80W SHARP polycrystalline modules are used in the cladding design with a further 178 165W SHARP modules providing the roof top power system.
